I
directed José Rivera's Marisol at the Ethnic
Cultural Theatre in Seattle in 2002. It's a dark, funny, and deeply
moving play about a young woman's search for protection when her
guardian angel abandons her to fight a war against God.
Act One takes place in various indoor locations around New York
City. In Act Two, the angelic war has begun and New York has
become a ravaged wasteland where very little makes sense.
The design team outdid themselves on this one -- we used six rolling,
reversible flats with a cityscape on one side and interiors on the
other, which moved around the stage to create the settings for each
scene. At the end of Act One, the flats all rolled back to reveal
the full stage for the first time.
